Background:
The Qijingzi are a reptilian species from a hot, desert moon of Thalia in the Althaea system – think humanoid snakes with hair. Largely humanoid in appearance, they are extremely flexible and loose jointed – they can dislocate most joints at will without obvious discomfort and curl into impossible positions by human standards. Their bones break easily but heal quickly – though skin wounds take longer to heal than with humans. Reptilian, they abhor the cold and are generally considered to have nomadic roots though there are few written records of their culture.

They are known for their highly poisonous venom that comes in various strains, depending (theoretically) on bloodline – paralysis is the weakest form, fast acting deadly venom in its strongest. The venom can be sold at a high price on the black market and rumour has it that some mobsters have kidnapped Qijingzi to milk them for this valuable liquid. Generally speaking there are an insignificant species in a multitude of others that humans have discovered, and though reputed as sly and deadly cutthroats on their home moon, they generally don't compare too well in the big mob scene.

However some have risen to respectable levels, Shuji's family among them. They migrated to Themis and rose to join the middle classes by good fortune and good sense and a good deal of social climbing. Unfortunately, Shuji's hatching was a severe disappointment to his mother (his father was nearly always absent due to his work, to the point of barely existing in Shuji's eyes), being imperfect physically – his teeth are stunted lack venom (essential for Qijingzi maturation rituals) and his night vision, though still good, is wretchedly poor by Qijingzi standards. He is too short (about 5"7), too spindly and as a child, extremely sickly. Horrified that she had mothered such a defect, Shuji's mother kept him hidden at home and spent a large amount of the family fortune trying to create something she could be proud of – black market doctors (she did not want the risk of someone of social importance finding out about her son) attempted all sorts of expensive experiments trying to create a venom Shuji could produce, using unsuccessful laser surgery to attempt to sort his eyesight (and in the process, damaged his day vision a little) until eventually one suggested an Iduna Project modification – see below.

Locked up at home, Shuji's only opportunity to socialize was with the A.I. system in his family's home, whom he called a friend, doctors and his mother. Given that he knew he was a failure to his mother and a toy to the doctors, he developed a deep hatred of both. Bitter and angry, he played on his mother's neurotic nature and tormented her to distraction until he made his escape, tumbling out into the dazzling outside world he'd only ever seen on screens. Hiding away on a merchant vessel, he smuggled himself off the planet and wound up on Glasir where he remained, finding his feet and learning about the world the hard way. Having being so isolated, he was extraordinarily naive and was easily exploited in his first few months – but he learnt quickly and his fierce desire to be accepted as himself and respected for his beliefs soon gave him an unholy hatred of the mobsters he found himself surrounded by. He swore to himself to clean up Glasir – by himself if he had to – using any available means.

For the past few years he has dedicated his life to upsetting deals and disrupting mob activities and enduring innumerable death threats and attempts on his life. He was very quickly jaded of his originally idyllic view of the outside world and has learnt to fend for himself effectively, living off what honest money he can make and trying in his own small way to set the world to rights - or at least, to the rights that he thinks it should be set to.

Personality: His isolated youth left Shuji highly mistrustful of adults and suspicious of his peers. He dislikes doctors, hates women and despises the mob. Though more often than not acidic and unfriendly, he has found that the innocence he entered the universe with is a useful façade and has used it many times to help despite newfound wisedom. He still has gaps in his social knowledge and a lot of his knowledge is evidently book-learnt, so to speak. He is a bitter, angry young man with a mission to heal the world. He does not shy away from violence or pain and learnt early the usefulness sex has in getting what he wants, though he has never considered himself to felt love in any form. He hopes one day to form a band of honest, trust worthy followers with whom he can defeat the mob and drag Glasir up by its bootstraps – and in his most private of dreams, with him sitting in the ruling throne.

Iduna Project Modification: Mechanical enhancement - One of the doctors who tried fixing Shuji up suggested an alternative method to load him with venom – an Iduna modification that would insert what are essentially small, flat needles underneath his nails that he can extend and withdraw at will, much like cat claws. These are loaded with poison, but he has to replenish the supply periodically as he cannot generate it as the doctors had hoped – this attempt at genetic modification failed.
